Transport Department of Maharashtra has taken a lead over other states in implementing a state wide project for issue of Driving Licences on secure processor based Smart Cards.
National Informatics Centre (NIC) has provided SARATHI, its software solution for licence related activities for this project and United Telecoms Limited (UTL) has implemented this project on “Build – Own – Operate” basis for a period of 10 years.

Smartcards
- Smart card – a processor embedded in a plastic card
- Along with Card reader, Smart card has processing power to serve different applications
- Smart cards provide data portability, security and convenience
Benfits
